COUNTRY CFO of BP BRIAN GILVARY ABOUT BRIAN GILVARY Brian Gilvary was appointed chief financial officer on 1 January 2012. The role includes responsibility for finance, tax, treasury, mergers and acquisitions, investor relations, audit, global business services, information technology and procurement. He also has accountability for both integrated supply and trading, and the shipping division responsible for BP’s tanker fleet. Brian joined BP in 1986 after obtaining a PhD in mathematics from the University of Manchester. Following a broad range of roles in upstream, downstream and trading in Europe and the US, he became downstream’s commercial director from 2002 to 2005. From 2005 until 2009 he was chief executive of the integrated supply and trading function, BP’s commodity trading arm. In 2010 he was appointed deputy group chief financial officer with responsibility for the finance function. He was a director of TNK-BP over two periods, from 2003 to 2005 and from 2010 until the sale of the business and BP’s acquisition of Rosneft equity in 2013. He served on the HM Treasury Financial Management Review Board from 2014 to 2017. Brian Gilvary has spent his entire career with BP, with broad experience of working across all facets of the group. This has provided him with deep insight into BP’s assets and businesses. Brian has been a key player as BP has implemented its strategy to transform into a ‘value over volume’ based business where trading is a key creator of value throughout the integrated business. In addition to underpinning his role as chief financial officer, his deep understanding of finance and trading has been vital in adjusting capital structures and operational costs while ensuring the group continues to be capable of meeting new opportunities. He played a major role in overseeing the financial consequences of the 2010 oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, and leading the 2015 settlement negotiations with the US government and states to resolve the outstanding federal and state claims. Brian also played a lead role in the negotiations around the exit of TNK-BP and investment into Rosneft and led the recent acquisition of the BHP onshore Lower 48 assets. Brian has also been at the centre of the group’s work on addressing cyber security risk.
