Finance Monthly CFO Awards 2020 www.finance-monthly.com 31 CHILE Finance Monthly CFO Awards 2020 ABOUT EMILIANO MURATORE Emiliano Muratore has more than 20 years of international banking experience in Grupo Santander. Emiliano is originally from Buenos Aires, Argentina. Mr. Muratore has a degree in business from Universidad Católica Argentina and a postgraduate degree in finance from Universidad de San Andrés. He started his professional career at Banco Santander in Argentina, then known as Banco Rio de la Plata. His career was initially in IT even though Finance has always been his passion. After 4 years in Santander’s unit in Argentina he moved to Santander’s global headquarters to work in their ALM group. Mr. Muratore worked at Santander’s headquarters for 4 years gaining invaluable experience in Santander financial management culture. In 2006, Emiliano decided to move back to South America, specifically to Banco Santander Chile, one of the group’s flagship subsidiaries and one of its oldest investments outside of Spain. Despite being a relatively small country, Chile offered a great opportunity given Santander Chile’s leading position in a country with a profound capital market. Emiliano’s most important initial challenge was setting up the Bank’s ALM Division, as the Finance Division in Chile still had both the client and balance sheet activities united in one area. Emiliano’s experience in ALM in Spain proved invaluable and Santander Chile became the first bank in Chile to run ALM in a separate division from Client Treasury services. The ALM became the sole area of the Bank in charge of liquidity, funding, transfer price setting and capital. During his tenure as Head of ALM, Santander Chile also made important strides in diversifying its funding base becoming one of Latin America’s most important international bond issuers. On the back of the highest rating of any Latam corporate, Santander Chile became a regular bond issuer in the 144a market, as well as becoming the first Chilean issuer to access the Swiss, Australian, Taiwanese, and Japanese markets. Santander Chile was also the first Chilean corporation to issue an international CLP bond and the first Latin American corporate to issue a short dated FRN, both under the 144a format. As a result of these positive results, in April 2016, Emiliano was appointed CFO of Banco Santander Chile. Apart from ALM, as CFO he oversees the Bank’s Economic Research Division, Strategic Planning and Investor Relations. Since taking over, the Bank has successfully reduced its funding costs below its main competitors, has spearheaded the transformation of the Bank to BIS III well ahead of other banks in Chile, the IR Department has been voted various times as the Best in Chile and the Economic Research time as the best forecast in Chile. In Strategic Planning Emiliano led an overhaul of the Strategic Planning process to incorporate more emphasis on digital banking and the overall client experience. Since becoming CFO until the end of 2019 (before the COVID19 crisis), Santander Chile’s total return was 23% compared to 8% for the market. In 2019 alone, Santander Chile’s market cap was the highest among all banks in Chile and the stock was trading at 2.4 price to book value, one of the highest levels globally. In 2018 he completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School. Currently, he is chairman of the Finance Committee at Chile’s Banking Association. He is also a member of the board at Fundación Belén Educa, a non-for profit educational organization that administers various schools in poor low income neighborhoods. www.santander.cl Emiliano’s experience in ALM in Spain proved invaluable and Santander Chile became the first bank in Chile to run ALM in a separate division from Client Treasury services.
